    Mitsubishi Electric Ducted Systems

    Ducted Heat Pumps Christchurch

Premium Mitsubishi Electric ducted heating and cooling systems professionally designed for Canterbury homes.

What is a ducted heat pump?

Whole-home comfort, concealed in the ceiling

A ducted heat pump provides discreet heating and cooling throughout the home via ceiling diffusers, while the main indoor unit and ducting remain concealed in the roof space. The result is even, quiet, whole-home comfort with no wall-mounted units.

Unlike individual high-wall units, a ducted system is designed as a single integrated solution — one outdoor unit, one indoor unit, and a carefully engineered duct network serving every room.

    Why ducted heating?

    Discreet, even and quiet

    • →Even temperatures across the whole home
    • →No wall-mounted units cluttering living spaces
    • →Quiet operation with the indoor unit concealed
    • →Clean architectural aesthetics with discreet diffusers
    • →Zoned control for different areas
    • →Integration with Lossnay fresh-air ventilation

    Why system design matters

Selecting a ducted system is not based on square metres

A ducted heat pump is only as good as the design behind it. We engineer every system around the factors that actually determine comfort.

The heat load of the home
    Individual room sizes
    Glazing and solar gain
    Insulation levels
    Ceiling heights
    Orientation
    Duct lengths and routing
    Airflow requirements
    Noise targets
    Return-air design
    Diffuser selection
    Available roof space

    Technical Design

    The engineering behind the comfort

    Room-by-room heat load

We calculate heating and cooling requirements for each room individually. Floor area alone tells you very little — a south-facing room with large glazing has fundamentally different needs to a small insulated bedroom.

    Airflow design

Supply air must reach every room at the right volume and velocity. We design throw, spread and drop characteristics so conditioned air mixes evenly without creating drafts.

    Duct sizing

Undersized ducts restrict airflow and increase noise. Oversized ducts reduce velocity and waste energy. Each run is sized for the airflow it needs to carry.

    Supply air

Correctly positioned supply diffusers deliver conditioned air where it's needed. Poor placement is a common cause of uneven temperatures and complaints.

    Return air

Return-air paths are just as important as supply. A system cannot deliver air it cannot recover. We size and position return-air grilles to balance the whole system.

    Diffuser selection

Different rooms suit different diffusers. We select from linear slot, round, square and architectural grilles based on ceiling type, airflow and aesthetic requirements.

    Static pressure

Every duct system has a static pressure the fan must work against. We design the duct network so external static pressure stays within the unit's operating range.

    Zone control

Zoning allows different areas to be conditioned independently. We design zone dampers into the ductwork from the start rather than bolting them on later.

    Installation & Commissioning

A premium heat pump deserves a premium installation

Installation quality means workmanship, neatness, duct support and routing, insulation, sealing, access and serviceability. The installation is not complete when the system switches on.

Professional commissioning includes airflow setup, balancing, static-pressure configuration, controller setup, system testing and client handover. This is what turns a collection of components into a properly functioning comfort system.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ducted heat pumps

How much does a ducted heat pump cost in Christchurch?→

Pricing depends on home layout, required capacity, number of rooms, duct design, zoning, controls, ventilation and installation complexity. Because every home is different, we provide a tailored proposal after assessing the property. We don't quote a fixed price because a properly designed system is never a one-size-fits-all product.

What size ducted heat pump does my house need?→

Square metres alone are insufficient. A proper heat-load calculation considers glazing, insulation, orientation, ceiling height and room-by-room requirements. A home with the same floor area can need very different capacity depending on how it's built.

How long does a ducted heat pump installation take?→

A ducted heat pump installation typically takes one to three days, depending on the system specification.

Should I be home during ducted installation?→

Yes—we prefer clients to be at home during ducted installation so we can discuss and confirm grille positions with you as the work progresses.

What is included in my installation quote?→

Your quote includes everything required for the agreed installation, including old-system removal where applicable, electrical work, commissioning, controller setup and clean-up. All electrical work is carried out by a registered electrical contractor. The price changes only if you change the agreed specification. Any plastering or painting you need to arrange separately will be discussed before installation.

    Will I need a plasterer or painter?→

Additional ceiling access openings are not generally required. If an opening is needed, we will discuss it with you before installation. We generally recommend engaging your own plasterer and painter to complete any associated repairs and decorating.

How do you check whether my home is suitable?→

Daniel personally assesses your home in person and discusses the available options with you. This helps establish a suitable system and installation approach for your property before the work begins.

What controls come with a ducted system?→

A standard ducted system includes a wall controller with a seven-day timer. Wi-Fi control and zoning are optional upgrades. Your quote will clearly identify the controls included in your installation.

Will you show me how to use the system?→

Yes. At handover, we give you a full explanation of how your system and controls work, including how to clean the filters. We also advise when your system is due for servicing.

What support is available after installation?→

We allow for follow-up visits to fine-tune airflow to suit your comfort. If you have questions, you can call Daniel directly. If he is unavailable, he will return your call as soon as he can. Our installations are also backed by a five-year workmanship warranty.

Can I add Lossnay ventilation to a ducted heat pump?→

Yes. Mitsubishi Electric Lossnay ventilation can be integrated with a ducted heat pump system, introducing filtered fresh air while recovering heat energy. We design the two systems to work together as one.

Can different rooms have different temperatures?→

With zone control, different areas of the home can be conditioned independently. This allows individual room comfort and reduces conditioning of unused spaces.

Can you replace an existing ducted heat pump?→

Yes — and we also review the existing duct system rather than automatically connecting a new unit to poorly designed ductwork. In many cases upgrading the duct design is what actually fixes the comfort problem.

Do you install high-wall heat pumps?→

Yes, particularly for replacement and upgrade installations. Our premium positioning applies regardless of system type — every installation is designed, not just fitted.

What brand of heat pump does Heat Pump Upgrade Co install?→

Mitsubishi Electric exclusively. We've chosen to specialise rather than offer numerous competing brands, so we can deliver deeper expertise and better long-term support.
